A fragile ceasefire has reportedly taken effect in the protracted conflict between Iran and Israel, bringing a halt to 12 days of intense hostilities. The reported cessation of fighting on Tuesday morning follows a period marked by significant escalation, including an alleged Israeli attack on Tehran’s Evin prison.

According to Iranian Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir, the strike on Evin prison, located in northern Tehran, occurred on Tuesday during visiting hours, when relatives were present. Jahangir reported that several Judiciary personnel and civilians were among those killed in the strike, which also caused partial destruction to the prison’s administrative offices building.

Authorities stated that the situation at the facility was immediately brought under control, and communication between prisoners and their families has been re-established.

The conflict initially erupted on June 13, with Iranian officials alleging an unprovoked war of aggression by Israel. This initial phase saw Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear, military, and residential sites, leading to hundreds of fatalities, including senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and ordinary citizens.

Iran swiftly retaliated, with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force executing 21 waves of missile strikes. These counterattacks, dubbed “Operation True Promise III,” reportedly inflicted heavy losses across various cities in the occupied territories.

The ceasefire, which came into effect this Tuesday, aims to de-escalate the volatile situation that has gripped the region for nearly two weeks, though the recent prison incident underscores the lingering tensions and the fragility of the peace.
