The Louisville Cardinals baseball team demonstrated resilience and offensive prowess in a dramatic College World Series (CWS) elimination game against the Arizona Wildcats. After a previous loss to Oregon State, the Cardinals, embodying their motto “So what, now what?”, rallied for a decisive victory, showcasing their determination and skill.

Arizona, having previously defeated Louisville in two NCAA Tournament matchups, entered the game after a loss to Coastal Carolina. Their offensive struggles continued, going 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position and 3 for 17 with runners on base. Despite managing two hits, they were unable to overcome Louisville’s offensive surge.

The Cardinals’ comeback began in a crucial late-inning scenario. With bases loaded and no outs, Zion Rose delivered a two-RBI single, scoring Eddie King Jr. and Jake Munroe, giving Louisville their first lead of the CWS. Subsequent hits by Kamau Neighbors, including an RBI single (his fourth hit of the game), and a sacrifice bunt by Alex Alicea extended the lead further. Strategic base running and errors by Arizona contributed to additional runs for Louisville.

Arizona’s pitching rotation saw changes throughout the game, with Garrett Hicks relieving starter Smith Bailey in the seventh inning and Tony Pluta entering in the eighth. Bailey’s performance included seven hits and two runs allowed over six innings, along with two walks and four strikeouts. Hicks’ brief appearance yielded one hit in one inning. Arizona’s defense, while contributing a double play in the sixth inning, couldn’t contain the Cardinals’ late-game offensive explosion.

Louisville’s pitching also experienced shifts, with Tucker Biven taking over from Wyatt Danilowicz in the sixth inning. Danilowicz’s performance featured two walks and three strikeouts across 1 ⅓ innings. Biven’s entrance stabilized the Cardinals’ defense, contributing to a key double play. Earlier in the game, Ethan Eberle started for Louisville, recording five strikeouts but also allowing three earned runs and three hit batters over 3 ⅔ innings.

Arizona’s scoring involved an early two-run lead with RBI singles by Adonys Guzman and Garen Caulfield and a home run by Guzman. However, Louisville’s defensive improvements and offensive outburst proved too much to overcome. The Cardinals’ victory ensures their continued participation in the CWS, with their next game scheduled against the loser of the Coastal Carolina-Oregon State matchup.
