Universal’s live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon has ignited the box office, proving that some stories are timeless. The film soared to a phenomenal $197.8 million worldwide opening, a testament to the enduring appeal of Hiccup and Toothless’s adventures.

International audiences embraced the remake with particular enthusiasm, contributing a massive $114 million to the impressive total. Mexico, the UK and Ireland, and China emerged as key markets, demonstrating the global reach of this beloved franchise.

The success isn’t surprising. Positive critical and audience reception, combined with the pre-existing popularity of the animated films and numerous TV series, created a perfect storm of anticipation. This, coupled with strategic trailer placement and the novelty of a DreamWorks Animation property receiving the live-action treatment, drew families and young adults alike to theaters.

Universal’s confidence is evident; a sequel is already slated for June 2027. This blockbuster launch follows the continued success of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake, which added another $46.6 million globally, pushing its total towards a potential billion-dollar milestone. The international market significantly boosted Lilo & Stitch’s earnings, adding $31.3 million to its coffers.

The summer movie season is officially in full swing. Next week, Pixar’s Elio joins the lineup, followed by M3GAN 2.0 and F1 later in June. July promises more cinematic excitement with Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman, and Fantastic Four: First Steps.
