Federal health officials have issued an urgent warning this week, advising consumers to immediately avoid certain Hello Fresh subscription meal kits that may be contaminated with deadly listeria bacteria. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a public health alert for these specific meals, which were produced by FreshRealm, a company linked to an expanding listeria outbreak.

The affected products include 10.1-ounce containers of Hello Fresh Ready Made Meals Cheesy Pulled Pork Pepper Pasta and 10-ounce containers of Hello Fresh Ready Made Meals Unstuffed Peppers with Ground Turkey. These meals were shipped directly to consumers. Consumers can identify the pork pepper pasta by establishment number Est. 47718 and lot code 49107 or Est. 2937 and lot code 48840. The unstuffed peppers with ground turkey are identified with Est. P-47718 and lot codes 50069, 50073, or 50698.

The problem was discovered after FreshRealm notified the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service that spinach used in these Hello Fresh products tested positive for listeria. This alert comes amidst a broader listeria outbreak; last month, FreshRealm confirmed that pasta supplied to various retailers, including Walmart, contained the same strain of listeria linked to an ongoing outbreak. That outbreak, initially tied to chicken fettuccine Alfredo, has tragically killed at least four people and sickened 20 individuals, with the most recent illness reported on September 11th.

FreshRealm officials previously stated that genetic testing found the outbreak strain of listeria in samples of pasta made and supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, California. Several other companies, including Kroger, Giant Eagle, and Albertson’s, have also recalled pasta salads and other dishes made with Nate’s Fine Foods products due to potential listeria contamination.

Listeria infections can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant people or their newborns. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Approximately 1,600 people contract listeria infections annually, with about 260 fatalities, according to the CDC. Consumers who have purchased these Hello Fresh meals are advised not to consume them and should discard them immediately.
