Breaking: Two Dead, 14 Injured in Downtown Montgomery Mass Shooting, Investigation Underway

A mass shooting in downtown Montgomery late Saturday night has left two people dead and 14 others injured, police confirmed. The incident, which Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described as a “mass shooting event,” occurred around 11:30 p.m. on October 4, near the intersection of Bibb and Commerce streets.

Among the deceased is an adult woman, while at least two juveniles are among the injured, with one suffering life-threatening wounds. In total, three victims remain in critical condition, and nine sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to MPD Lt. Tina McGriff.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of those shot. Detectives are actively pursuing leads, reviewing evidence including witness statements and surveillance footage. The incident took place during a bustling night in the city’s tourist district, shortly after a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College, and coinciding with the debut of new downtown attractions. Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed shared his condolences, highlighting that the violence occurred despite police patrols “within 50 feet of both sides” of the scene.
