Starbucks has recently closed five locations across Snohomish County, including stores in Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mill Creek, and Bothell. These closures, which took place in the last week, are part of a broader North American restructuring initiative aimed at reversing declining sales and enhancing profitability.

CEO Brian Niccol announced on September 25 that the company would reduce its North American store count by approximately 1%. The decision targets locations deemed unprofitable or unable to deliver the desired customer experience. This strategic move follows six consecutive financial quarters of declining sales for stores open at least 13 months in the U.S. and Canada, with the quarter ending July 29, 2025, reporting a 2% drop from the previous period.

The affected Snohomish County locations include two in Lynnwood (a drive-thru at 19931 Highway 99 and a store in the Fred Meyer shopping center at 2902 164th Street SW), one in Edmonds (21920 Highway 99), one in Mill Creek (15517 Main Street), and one in Bothell (2020 Maltby Road). Despite these shutdowns, several Starbucks outlets continue to operate in these communities.

Starbucks has moved quickly to remove its branding from the closed sites. The company projects a $1 billion cost associated with these closures and employee reductions, which will cover lease terminations, asset disposal, and severance for both retail and non-retail staff. While new store openings are planned for fiscal year 2026, the immediate strategy also includes upgrading more than 1,000 existing locations over the next 12 months.
