Firefighters have successfully contained a significant blaze that erupted at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, California, on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, with officials confirming no injuries to personnel or contractors. The incident, which saw a massive fireball erupt from the facility, prompted a swift response from Chevron’s on-site fire department, supported by emergency crews from El Segundo and Manhattan Beach.

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass were briefed on the situation, with Newsom’s office stating they were coordinating in real-time with local and state agencies to ensure public safety and protect the surrounding community. Mayor Bass confirmed the Los Angeles Fire Department was ready to assist if needed, and that there was no known impact to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) located just north of the refinery.

A temporary 3-hour shelter-in-place order was issued for parts of Manhattan Beach’s Tree Section as a precautionary measure, advising residents to stay indoors. However, Chevron spokespersons confirmed that no evacuation orders were put in place for area residents and no exceedances were detected by the facility’s fence-line monitoring system. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
