Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, has ignited a firestorm of international condemnation and triggered widespread protests in major cities worldwide, including Istanbul, Athens, Buenos Aires, Rome, Berlin, and Madrid.

The flotilla, comprising approximately 500 individuals from at least 44 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Turkiye, was intercepted en route to the besieged enclave. Global leaders have swiftly reacted, with responses ranging from outright condemnation to urgent calls for Israel to grant consular access and secure the release of their detained citizens.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry denounced the interception as an “attack and aggression,” asserting the flotilla’s right to free passage in international waters. Turkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled Israel’s intervention an “act of terrorism” violating international law, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan describing it as “banditry.”

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim demanded the immediate release of Malaysian citizens and pledged to hold Israel accountable. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa echoed calls for immediate release, confirming Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Nkosi Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela, was among those detained, and urged for the life-saving cargo to reach Gaza.

In a significant diplomatic move, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the expulsion of Israeli diplomats and the cancellation of a free trade agreement. European nations, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Belgium, and France, expressed deep concern, called for adherence to international law, and demanded consular access and the swift return of their nationals. Italian unions have called for a general strike in solidarity, though Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the flotilla while ensuring citizen repatriation.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the “dastardly attack,” while in the United States, Democratic legislators urged White House action to protect the flotilla, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) accused Israel of “piracy.” UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, criticized Israel’s “illegal abduction” and the “complicit inaction” of Western governments, highlighting the plight of Gazans.
