International mediators, including Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, are intensifying efforts to persuade Hamas to accept US President Donald Trump‘s proposed Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal. Meetings held in Doha on Monday and Tuesday saw top officials, including Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani and Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, urge Hamas leaders to provide a positive response to the offer.

According to Axios, al-Thani reportedly informed Hamas that a better deal was unlikely and that President Trump’s commitment to ending the war served as a strong guarantee. Hamas has indicated it would study the proposal responsibly, though conflicting reports suggest internal divisions, with some within the group viewing the offer as unjust and potentially leaning towards rejection, while others emphasize the importance of a positive response to end the conflict.

The comprehensive proposal, endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, includes the release of 48 remaining hostages within 72 hours in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 Gazans detained since October 7, 2023. It also outlines a three-phase Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, disarmament of Hamas, demilitarization of the Strip, and the establishment of an international transitional government. A key sticking point for Hamas is reportedly the requirement to hand over all hostages early, which would diminish its bargaining power.

Globally, the plan has garnered significant support from Western, Arab, and Muslim nations, including the Palestinian Authority. Russia and Pope Leo XIV have also publicly backed the initiative, hoping for its swift implementation to halt the ongoing conflict. However, several US anti-Israel activist groups and figures, including US Rep. Rashida Tlaib, have vehemently denounced the proposal, labeling it as serving Israeli interests and a “blueprint for surrender.”

President Trump has given Hamas “three or four days” to respond, warning of severe consequences if the offer is not accepted, underscoring the urgency of the situation as diplomatic pressure mounts for a resolution in Gaza.
