Nothing Launches ‘Playground’ AI Tool for On-Device Mini-App Creation

Smartphone innovator Nothing has officially launched “Playground,” an advanced AI tool designed to democratize app development. Revealed this past Tuesday, Playground empowers users to create functional mini-apps and widgets using simple text prompts, deploying them onto Nothing’s “Essential Apps” platform.
Initially, Playground supports the creation of widgets such as flight trackers, meeting briefs, or virtual pets. Users can either build these from scratch with text commands or customize existing applications within the Essential Apps ecosystem. For those with technical expertise, the platform also allows for code modification to fine-tune app functionality.
Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, confirmed that the technology is not yet mature enough to support full-screen app development. This launch follows closely on the heels of Nothing’s recent $200 million funding round, led by Tiger Global, where Pei articulated the company’s ambition to develop an AI-powered operating system and new AI-centric devices.
In a recent conversation with TechCrunch, Pei criticized the slow pace of software innovation among smartphone manufacturers. “With breakthroughs in AI, we believe that operating systems will change and become more personal. Our devices have so much context on us, but that is not being leveraged right now,” he stated, emphasizing Nothing’s commitment to leveraging AI for a more intuitive user experience.
Despite its innovative approach, Nothing currently holds less than a 1% share of the global smartphone market. However, Pei views this as an advantage, reiterating the company’s strategy to build hardware specifically optimized for AI applications.
While “vibe-coding” holds significant promise, similar smartphone app creation tools have historically struggled due to security and maintenance concerns. Pei acknowledged these challenges, asserting that maintaining robust security while fostering developer creativity will be paramount for Playground’s success.
Currently, Nothing is offering these AI tools free of charge, with no immediate plans for a paid tier. The company’s primary focus is on cultivating a vibrant community around Playground and recognizing significant user contributions.
