A Ukrainian national, identified as Volodymyr Z, has been arrested in Poland as part of the ongoing investigation into the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. The arrest, made in the early hours of Tuesday near Warsaw under a European arrest warrant, marks a significant development in the high-profile case.

Volodymyr Z was previously named in an August 2024 arrest warrant issued by German prosecutors. His lawyer has indicated that they will challenge his extradition to Germany, arguing that the warrant is inadmissible given Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine and Gazprom’s ownership stake in the Nord Stream pipelines.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, critical for delivering Russian gas to Germany, were ruptured by explosives in September 2022, cutting off a key energy source for Europe amid an escalating energy crisis. While Ukraine has denied involvement, and Russia has blamed Western nations, no party has officially claimed responsibility for the attack. This latest arrest follows the detention of another Ukrainian national, Serhii K, by Italian authorities last month, highlighting the international scope of the investigation into the mysterious blasts.
