In a series of extraordinary speeches to top US military leaders, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and former President Donald Trump unveiled a radical vision for the nation’s armed forces, promising to dismantle ‘politically correct’ culture, implement stringent new physical standards, and even hinted at potential military deployment within American cities.

Defense Secretary Hegseth announced immediate and significant changes to military policy. He declared an end to the ‘war on warriors,’ stating that combatants would now be required to meet the ‘highest male standard’ in physical fitness tests. Hegseth acknowledged this could exclude some women, asserting that ‘standards must be uniform, gender neutral, and high,’ and if that meant some women didn’t qualify, ‘it is what it is.’

Further reforms include a renewed focus on physical appearance, with Hegseth criticizing ‘fat troops’ and ‘fat generals and admirals’ and increasing fitness testing to twice a year. He also mandated an end to ‘unprofessional appearances,’ specifically banning beards for officers. A cornerstone of his address was the vow to eradicate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, which he labeled ‘woke garbage,’ aiming to restore a ‘warrior ethos’ and ‘fix decades of decay’ within what he termed the ‘woke department.’

Hegseth also announced an overhaul of the military’s internal disciplinary and complaint systems, including ending anonymous complaints and reviewing definitions of ‘toxic,’ ‘bullying,’ and ‘hazing’ to empower leaders. He justified previous firings of senior commanders and warned that any leaders whose ‘hearts sink’ at the new standards should ‘do the honorable thing and resign.’

Donald Trump echoed Hegseth’s sentiments, emphasizing a shift to a merit-based military and criticizing past ‘political correctness.’ In a wide-ranging speech, Trump claimed the US faced ‘a war from within’ and suggested using ‘dangerous cities’ like Chicago and Portland as ‘training grounds’ for military troops and the National Guard. He also indicated that Hegseth would soon announce major reforms to streamline military acquisitions and expedite foreign military sales. Trump concluded by contemplating making the military ‘larger’ and promised more ‘historic announcements’ to ‘fully embrace the identity of the Department of War.’
