Deadly Russian Barrage Hits Kyiv, Other Regions; US Weighs Tomahawk Missile Sale to Ukraine
Ukraine is reeling after a devastating overnight barrage of Russian drones and missiles, which killed at least four people in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old girl, and wounded scores more across multiple regions. The capital bore the brunt of the assault, marking the most significant bombardment since a previous deadly attack last month.
Kyiv City Administration head Tymur Tkachenko confirmed Sunday’s casualties, with at least 10 wounded in the capital alone, as civilian areas were targeted. Thick black smoke billowed from blast sites, and Tkachenko lamented, “The Russians have restarted the child death counter.”
Across the country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported at least 40 wounded, a number later updated by the Interior Ministry to 70, with over 100 civilian objects damaged. Regions including Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa were also hit. In Zaporizhzhia, three children were among the 27 wounded.
The widespread aggression occurred as U.S. Vice President JD Vance revealed in a Friday interview that the U.S. is actively considering Ukraine’s request for Tomahawk cruise missiles. These long-range weapons, capable of striking targets up to 1,000 miles away, would significantly expand Ukraine’s military capabilities, potentially bringing Moscow within range. Vance stated President Biden would make the final decision.
The attacks prompted a defensive response from neighboring Poland, which deployed fighter jets early Sunday as a “preventive” measure against the strikes near its border. Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 566 out of 595 Russian drones and 45 out of 48 missiles. Zelenskyy condemned the assault, stating it demonstrates Russia’s desire to continue fighting and killing, deserving the “toughest pressure from the world.”
