Authorities have charged Nigel Max Edge, 40, of Oak Island, with three counts of first-degree murder and multiple other felonies following a mass shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina. The incident, which occurred Saturday night at the American Fish Company in the Southport Yacht Basin, left three people dead and at least eight others injured.

Edge made his first court appearance Sunday afternoon at the Brunswick County Courthouse. He faces five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, with more charges anticipated as the investigation continues.

According to officials, Edge, who self-identifies as a combat veteran suffering from PTSD, opened fire from a boat on patrons at the outdoor bar around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. He reportedly used a “short barrel AR rifle with suppressor, folding stock, and scope.” Following the attack, the boat proceeded up the Intracoastal Waterway before Edge was apprehended by the U.S. Coast Guard at a public boat ramp in Oak Island shortly after 10 p.m.

Five victims remain hospitalized, with at least one in serious condition. The Southport Fire Department and other agencies responded rapidly to the active shooter reports, advising residents to avoid the area.
