Urgent Health Alert: Listeria Prompts Removal of Walmart, Trader Joe’s Pasta Meals
Federal health officials have issued a critical warning to consumers regarding certain heat-and-eat pasta meals sold at Walmart and Trader Joe’s, which may be contaminated with a strain of listeria bacteria linked to a deadly outbreak. Consumers are urged not to eat these products, as some may still be in refrigerators.
The U.S. Agriculture Department updated a public health alert to include Trader Joe’s Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettucine Alfredo, sold in 16-ounce plastic trays with best-by dates of Sept. 20, Sept. 24, and Sept. 27. These products bear the number P-45288 inside the USDA inspection mark.
Additionally, a warning was issued for Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatballs & Marinara Sauce, sold at Walmart in refrigerated 12-ounce clear plastic trays. These items have best-by dates ranging from Sept. 22 through Oct. 1 and contain establishment numbers “EST. 50784” and “EST. 47718” within the USDA mark of inspection. These Walmart products were distributed nationwide.
While no official recall has been issued, FreshRealm, the producer, advised Walmart to pull the meals, and Walmart has confirmed stopping sales and removing products from shelves. The detected listeria strain in the linguine ingredient matches the strain from an earlier outbreak tied to chicken fettuccine Alfredo, which resulted in four deaths and at least 20 illnesses.
Listeria infections can cause severe illness, particularly for older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Consumers who have purchased these products should discard them immediately.
