Microsoft has made a significant concession for consumers in the European Economic Area (EEA), announcing free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 users ahead of the looming October 14, 2025, end-of-life deadline. This reversal comes after strong advocacy from the consumer rights group Euroconsumers.

Previously, Microsoft had outlined paid ESU options, including a one-off $30 fee or a ‘free’ alternative tied to earning Microsoft Reward Points or syncing settings via Windows Backup. Euroconsumers, however, challenged these conditions, asserting they conflicted with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the Digital Content Directive, and broader EU sustainability objectives.

According to recent correspondence highlighted by Euroconsumers, Microsoft will now provide a no-cost ESU option for Windows 10 consumer users in the EEA. While a Microsoft account will still be necessary, the requirements to back up settings, apps, or engage with Microsoft Rewards have been removed, addressing key DMA-related concerns raised by the advocacy group.

Despite this victory, Euroconsumers maintains that the one-year ESU period remains insufficient. The group points out that an estimated 850 million active Windows 10 devices cannot upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware requirements, potentially forcing many consumers into premature hardware purchases—a scenario at odds with sustainability goals. Euroconsumers intends to continue discussions with Microsoft to secure a longer period of device protection.
