FORT PIERCE, Fla. – A jury has found Ryan Routh guilty of federal charges for attempting to assassinate Donald Trump as he played golf in Florida one year ago. The verdict, delivered today after two hours of deliberation, sparked immediate chaos in the courtroom as Routh, representing himself, attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen.

Officers quickly swarmed Routh, subduing him and dragging him from the courtroom. The flexible pen, designed to prevent its use as a weapon by detainees, did not cause any injury. Amidst the commotion, Routh’s daughter, Sara Routh, was heard screaming, “Dad, I love you, don’t do anything. I’ll get you out. He didn’t hurt anybody,” before she was escorted out.

Routh, 59, was subsequently brought back before U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in shackles, a change from his unshackled appearance during the trial. He faces a potential life sentence, with his sentencing scheduled for December 18 at 9:30 a.m.

Prosecutors had argued that Routh spent weeks plotting to kill Trump, ultimately aiming a rifle through shrubbery at the then-Republican candidate on September 15, 2024, at his West Palm Beach country club. Routh, who chose not to testify, maintained in his closing argument that he did not intend to kill anyone, noting that he never pulled the trigger.

Following the verdict, Donald Trump commented from New York that the case was “really well handled” and that “justice was served.” Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche also issued statements, underscoring the Department of Justice’s commitment to prosecuting political violence and protecting the nation’s democratic institutions.
