Voters across southern Arizona are casting their ballots today, September 23, 2025, in a special election to determine the next representative for the state’s 7th Congressional District. The election aims to fill the vacancy left by the late Democratic U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who passed away in March.

The winner of today’s contest will serve the remaining 15 months of Grijalva’s term. While this race is not expected to shift the balance of power in the U.S. House, it is one of two remaining vacancies in strong Democratic districts that could further reduce the Republican’s narrow 219-213 majority.

The primary contenders are Adelita Grijalva, former Pima County Supervisor and daughter of the late congressman, representing the Democrats, and Republican nominee Daniel Butierez, a contractor and small business owner. Adelita Grijalva secured the Democratic primary in July with significant endorsements from prominent party figures, while Butierez also won his primary convincingly.

The 7th Congressional District is a majority-Hispanic area, spanning from Yuma to Tucson and along Arizona’s border with Mexico. Democrats hold a nearly 2-to-1 voter registration advantage across the district. Historically, the district has leaned heavily Democratic, with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris winning it by a substantial margin in 2024.

Polls are set to close districtwide at 7 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET). Initial results are not expected to be released before 11 p.m. ET. The Associated Press will monitor the vote count and declare a winner once a clear outcome is determined.
