Stuttgart, Germany — Porsche is undertaking a significant strategic realignment of its product roadmap, announcing a recalibration of its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions for several key models. The anticipated flagship electric SUV, codenamed K1 and designed to sit above the Cayenne, will now debut with combustion engine and plug-in hybrid powertrains, rather than as a pure electric model.

This shift comes as the luxury automaker responds to what it describes as a slowdown in EV sales growth, coupled with external pressures including U.S. import tariffs and a decline in the Chinese luxury market. As part of the revised strategy, a gas-powered replacement for the Macan is also in development, with a plug-in hybrid version slated for 2028. Furthermore, the current generation of the 718 two-door will continue to be offered with gasoline engines in its top-tier RS and GT variants.

While the all-electric Boxster and Cayman remain on track, a new EV platform initially scheduled for 2030 has been pushed back. Existing EV models like the Taycan, Macan Electric, and the upcoming Cayenne EV will continue as planned. Porsche anticipates spending approximately $3.65 billion this financial year to facilitate this strategic realignment, with further investments expected in the coming years.

The company aims to navigate the challenging transition to an all-electric portfolio by offering a diverse powertrain strategy, ensuring models like the Macan, Cayenne, and 718 are available with both electric and traditional combustion/hybrid options, alongside its dedicated EV and performance lines like the Taycan, 911, and Panamera.
