A tiger handler was fatally mauled over the weekend at the Growler Pines Tiger Preserve in Hugo, Oklahoma, the facility confirmed. Ryan Easley, who cared for the tiger involved in the incident, died following the attack which occurred on Saturday.

The preserve expressed profound sorrow, stating on Facebook that the tragedy is a “painful reminder of both the beauty and unpredictability of the natural world.” They remembered Easley as a “passionate advocate for wildlife conservation” with a deep love for big cats, emphasizing his understanding of the risks involved, rooted in respect and care for the animals.

In response to the incident, Growler Pines Tiger Preserve has canceled all tours and animal encounters indefinitely.

The private facility, known for its guided tours and animal demonstrations, has drawn criticism from animal protection groups. On Sunday, PETA issued a statement asserting that “it’s never safe for humans to interact directly with apex predators,” and urged wild animal exhibitors to “get out of the business now and send the animals to accredited sanctuaries where they can finally live in peace.”
