Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan has been elected President of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), taking the helm as the union prepares for critical negotiations with major Hollywood studios. Nolan, one of his generation’s most successful and influential directors, succeeds Lesli Linka Glatter, who served two terms.

Expressing profound honor, Nolan stated, “Our industry is experiencing tremendous change, and I thank the Guild’s membership for entrusting me with this responsibility.” He committed to collaborating with the newly elected Board to secure vital creative and economic protections for DGA members.

Nolan’s election comes as the DGA looks toward initial conversations with the Alliance for Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) by early next year, ahead of its current contract’s expiration on June 30, 2026. The union’s recent focus has included lobbying for enhanced set safety and expanding foreign streaming residuals, notably securing its last contract in 2023 without a work stoppage.

This marks a rare instance of an A-list director assuming leadership of the union at the peak of their professional power. Nolan, celebrated for films like “Oppenheimer” and “Inception,” was elected Saturday evening by 167 delegates representing over 19,500 guild members during the DGA’s biennial national convention. Other key election results include Laura Belsey re-elected National Vice President and Paris Barclay re-elected Secretary-Treasurer, among other officials.
