Trump Appoints Former Attorney Lindsey Halligan to Lead Key Virginia Prosecutor’s Office Amid Controversy

President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Lindsey Halligan, one of his former defense attorneys, to lead the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. The controversial move comes just a day after the previous head of the office, Erik Siebert, resigned under pressure from the Trump administration.
Halligan, who currently serves in the White House staff secretary’s office, notably represented Trump during the classified documents investigation. Critics have pointed out her lack of prosecutorial experience, as her background includes practicing license law in Florida and handling insurance claims before joining Trump’s legal team.
Trump made the announcement via his social media platform, stating the U.S. Attorney’s Office needed a “tough prosecutor” to “get things moving.” He specifically criticized Siebert, whose resignation followed reports that administration officials pushed him to bring a criminal case against New York Attorney General Letitia James, despite investigators finding no clear evidence of mortgage fraud.
In his posts, Trump lauded Halligan as “Fair, Smart, and will provide, desperately needed, JUSTICE FOR ALL!” He also praised her loyalty, referencing her role in his “winning fight against the Weaponization of our Justice System” and her presence during the Mar-a-Lago raid.
The President’s decision to oust Siebert was reportedly influenced by the fact that Virginia’s two Democratic senators supported Siebert’s nomination. Trump stated, “When I saw that he got approved by those two men, I said, pull it, because he can’t be any good.” Following Siebert’s departure, Maggie Cleary, an official recently joining the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, was named the acting head of the office, pending Halligan’s official nomination and confirmation process.
