Tyler Robinson Charged with Capital Murder in Charlie Kirk Assassination; Confession Texts and DNA Evidence Revealed

PROVO, Utah — Prosecutors have filed capital murder charges against Tyler Robinson, 22, in the assassination of prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Authorities revealed a series of incriminating text messages, a hidden confession note, and DNA evidence, indicating their intent to seek the death penalty in the high-profile case.
Court documents detail how Robinson, following the fatal Sept. 10 shooting of Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus, texted his romantic partner to confess to the attack, which he had allegedly planned for over a week. He directed his partner to a hidden note under a keyboard that read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” When confronted by his partner, Robinson responded, “I am, I’m sorry.”
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray confirmed that DNA found on the trigger of the bolt-action rifle used in the killing matched Robinson. The rifle was reportedly a gift from Robinson’s grandfather. Robinson made a brief court appearance via video from jail on Tuesday, where a judge appointed him an attorney.
Investigators are actively probing whether Robinson received assistance in the assassination. While Robinson’s partner, who is transgender, shared information with authorities, it remains unclear if they are under investigation. Robinson reportedly remained at large until his parents recognized him in a photo released by police and facilitated his peaceful surrender.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a definitive motive, but Gray noted Robinson texted his partner, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” Kirk, 31, was known for energizing the Republican youth movement and his organization, Turning Point USA. Robinson’s mother informed investigators her son had shifted politically to the left and became a strong supporter of LGBTQ+ rights in the past year. In addition to capital murder, Robinson faces charges of discharge of a firearm, obstructing justice, and witness tampering.
