CLEVLEAND, MS – The mysterious death of Delta State University student Demartravion “Trey” Reed continues to spark intense scrutiny this week, as new details emerge and family members demand transparency. Reed, 21, was found deceased Monday morning, hanging from a tree near the university’s pickleball courts, prompting an immediate investigation and widespread concern.

While preliminary examinations by the Bolivar County Coroner, Randolph “Rudy” Seals Jr., indicate no signs of foul play, such as lacerations or broken bones, Reed’s family and civil rights attorney Ben Crump are not satisfied. Crump, who was retained by the family on Tuesday, has publicly called for full access to all video footage related to the investigation and announced plans for an independent autopsy to verify official findings.

The incident has deeply affected the Delta State community, with University President Dan Ennis acknowledging the painful historical context of racial violence in the Jim Crow South, which the imagery of Reed’s death evokes for many. Campus law enforcement presence has been increased following threats received since the news spread.

Adding to the pressure, Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson issued a demand on Tuesday for a federal investigation into Reed’s death, highlighting Mississippi’s history of lynching and racial violence. The Cleveland Police Department is now leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, as the community awaits answers.
