Salt Lake City: Two Arrested in Apparent Bomb Plot Targeting News Vehicle

Two individuals have been arrested in Salt Lake City after an incendiary device was discovered and disarmed under a news media vehicle on Friday. Authorities have identified the suspects as Adeeb Nasir, 58, and Adil Justice Ahmed Nasir, 31, who were booked into Salt Lake County Jail on Sunday and are currently being held without bail.
According to court documents, the device was lit but “failed to function as designed,” preventing a potentially catastrophic explosion. Fox 13, a local Salt Lake City news station, confirmed that the targeted vehicle belonged to their crew and was parked adjacent to an occupied building. Unified Fire Authority Investigations officer Jeffrey David Nelson stated in an affidavit that the incident posed a “significant threat to public safety” with a risk of mass casualties, due to the nature and placement of the device.
The FBI is leading the ongoing investigation, assisted by the Unified Fire Authority bomb squad. Investigators tracked the suspects to a home on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, where they reportedly found firearms, illegal narcotics, and hoax weapons of mass destruction. The suspects’ claims about the legitimacy of the hoax devices led to evacuations in nearby residences. Both men were prohibited from legally owning firearms due to prior histories of illicit drug use.
The Nasirs could face serious charges, including attempted aggravated arson, threat of terrorism, and possession of weapons of mass destruction. Their legal representation status remains unclear. The incident occurs amidst heightened media presence in the area following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week at Utah Valley University, though a direct connection between the two events has not been established.
