Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has strongly condemned attempts to co-opt the British flag as a symbol of violence and division, declaring that the nation will never surrender its emblem. His remarks follow a weekend of significant unrest in central London, where a large ‘Unite the Kingdom’ march, organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, saw over 150,000 participants, met by a 5,000-strong counter-protest.

Starmer emphasized that while peaceful protest is a core British value, the government will not tolerate assaults on police officers or the intimidation of individuals based on their background or skin colour. He reiterated that the Union Flag represents a diverse country built on tolerance, diversity, and respect, and must not be hijacked by extremists.

The protests led to considerable disruption and violence, with police reporting 26 officers injured, four seriously, and 24 arrests made. Business Secretary Peter Kyle described the events as ‘klaxon calls’ for leaders to address public concerns, particularly regarding immigration, while also criticizing tech billionaire Elon Musk’s ‘totally inappropriate’ comments to protesters via videolink, where Musk urged them to ‘fight back’ and called for a change in UK government.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, addressed the crowds directly, criticizing politicians. The Prime Minister’s firm stance underscores the government’s commitment to upholding national unity and protecting public order against divisive ideologies.
