U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Israel on Saturday for urgent discussions with Israeli officials regarding the path forward in Gaza. His visit comes as diplomatic efforts to end the nearly two-year-old conflict have been severely complicated by a recent Israeli strike on Hamas operatives in Qatar.

Rubio, who is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other leaders on Sunday and Monday, conveyed President Donald Trump’s strong disapproval of the Qatar operation. Despite this, Rubio reiterated the U.S. commitment to Israel, stating, “We’re going to talk about what the future holds, and I’m going to get a much better understanding of what their plans are moving forward.”

The Israeli strike in Doha, which targeted Hamas leaders, has drawn widespread international condemnation and appears to have halted attempts to secure an Israel-Hamas ceasefire and the release of 48 hostages. This development is particularly critical ahead of the upcoming U.N. General Assembly session, where the Gaza war is expected to be a primary focus.

In an effort to manage the fallout, Rubio and Vice President JD Vance met with Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at the White House on Friday. President Trump also held discussions with the Qatari Prime Minister in New York. The Trump administration is navigating a delicate diplomatic line, as the strike has angered key Middle East allies including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, potentially jeopardizing wider regional peace initiatives. Trump has distanced the U.S. from the strike, promising Qatar it would not be repeated and joining a U.N. Security Council statement condemning the action.

Beyond immediate crisis management, Rubio’s agenda in Israel includes a visit to the City of David, an archaeological site in contested east Jerusalem. This visit occurs amidst ongoing debates about the creation of a Palestinian state, a proposal strongly opposed by Prime Minister Netanyahu, highlighting the enduring complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
