President Donald Trump has issued a powerful call for NATO nations to implement “major sanctions” against Russia, conditioned on their commitment to halt purchases of oil from Moscow. The President’s demand, articulated in a Truth Social post that he described as a letter to all NATO nations and “the world,” underscores a renewed push for aggressive economic measures aimed at ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In addition to Russian sanctions, Trump urged NATO allies to impose “50% to 100% TARIFFS ON CHINA,” stating that such levies would “break” Beijing’s strong influence over Russia. These tariffs, he suggested, should be withdrawn once the Russia-Ukraine war concludes, highlighting a strategic effort to reshape global power dynamics.

While President Trump has previously threatened sanctions against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, he has largely deferred their imposition, reportedly hoping to broker a peace deal. Analysts have also suggested a reluctance rooted in concerns that a defeated Russia might be driven further into an alliance with China, potentially strengthening Beijing’s global position.

Trump’s latest statement, however, marks a clear shift, placing the onus on NATO members to intensify pressure on Russia. He criticized what he termed NATO’s “far less than 100%” commitment to winning the conflict, specifically pointing to some members, like Hungary and Slovakia, who continue to purchase Russian fossil fuels. “It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia,” Trump wrote.

Echoing the administration’s stance, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright affirmed the goal to “displace all Russian gas” and bring an end to the war. “President Trump, America, and all the nations of the EU, we want to end the Russian-Ukraine war,” Wright stated, reinforcing the united front against Russian energy dependence.
