OpenAI is embarking on a pivotal strategic transformation, aiming to become a ‘full stack’ technology powerhouse after reaching a crucial agreement with Microsoft. The AI leader announced late Thursday it signed a memorandum of understanding to resolve a contractual dispute, a move expected to streamline its corporate structure and facilitate significant fundraising for its ambitious plans.

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar confirmed the direction at a Goldman Sachs tech conference this week, stating, ‘Think of OpenAI in terms of becoming very much a full stack company.’ This strategy involves developing its own AI chips, building proprietary data centers, and expanding a suite of AI-powered applications beyond ChatGPT, directly challenging integrated tech giants like Google.

The company’s aggressive expansion in September 2025 includes the appointment of Vijaye Raji as CTO of Applications and the acquisition of his startup, Statsig, for over $1 billion. Shortly after, Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications, launched the OpenAI Jobs Platform, signaling a broader push into professional networking. These developments, alongside previous acquisitions like Jony Ive’s AI gadget startup, highlight OpenAI’s commitment to controlling every aspect of its AI ecosystem and securing its path to market dominance.
