Analysis Reveals Over 50 Cases Linking Trump Rhetoric to Violence, Threats Since 2015

A comprehensive review by ABC News has identified at least 54 criminal cases where former President Donald Trump was invoked in direct connection with violent acts, threats of violence, or allegations of assault across America. Despite Trump’s repeated public disavowals of violence, the investigation, spanning from 2015 to early 2020, reveals a pattern where perpetrators cited his rhetoric or expressed support for him during or immediately after their actions.
The cases range from physical assaults and hate crimes to bomb plots and threats against public officials and minority groups. In numerous instances, court documents and police reports explicitly detail assailants stating motivations such as ‘This is for Trump,’ or expressing views like ‘That’s why I like Trump’ when questioned about their actions. The review found that 41 of the 54 cases reflected individuals echoing presidential rhetoric, rather than protesting it.
Notable incidents include the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting, where the alleged shooter’s anti-immigrant screed, while claiming to predate Trump, acknowledged alignment with some of his public statements. Other cases involve threats against members of Congress, attacks on individuals wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ hats, and assaults on minority groups. Federal law enforcement authorities have privately expressed concerns that, despite Trump’s denunciations, his inconsistent statements and style could inspire violence-prone individuals.
