Spotify has officially begun rolling out high-quality, lossless music streaming support for its premium account holders, fulfilling a promise made years ago. This highly anticipated feature, offering up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC quality, is designed to deliver uncompressed, CD-quality audio directly to users.

The company confirmed that lossless streaming will be progressively available to users in over 50 countries throughout October. Key markets including the U.S., U.K., Australia, Germany, Japan, and Sweden are among those already receiving access. Premium subscribers will be notified within their app once the feature is live for their account, and can enable it via the ‘Settings and Privacy’ menu under ‘Media Quality’.

While the new feature is accessible across various devices, users must manually activate the lossless setting for each device. Given the larger file sizes associated with lossless audio, Spotify will provide data usage tracking. It’s important to note that while Wi-Fi streaming supports lossless quality, Bluetooth-connected devices currently do not due to bandwidth limitations. Users can leverage Spotify Connect to stream lossless audio to compatible Wi-Fi devices from brands like Bose, Yamaha, and Bluesound.

This launch positions Spotify to catch up with rivals such as Apple Music and Amazon Music, which introduced their lossless offerings in 2021 and 2019, respectively. Spotify states that nearly all of its 100-million-song library will support the new high-fidelity standard.
