Authorities are engaged in an intensive manhunt for the shooter responsible for the fatal shooting of conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, who was killed Wednesday at an event at Utah Valley University. The FBI has now deployed its full resources to assist state authorities in the investigation, confirming its Salt Lake City field office responded immediately to the incident.

Kirk, 31, was shot during his organization’s ‘The American Comeback Tour’ at the Orem, Utah campus. Utah Department of Public Safety officials have described the incident as a “targeted attack,” with the suspect believed to have fired a single shot from a building roof. While two individuals were initially detained, they have since been released after being deemed unconnected to the shooting, though one faces an obstruction charge.

The assassination has sparked widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. President Trump ordered flags to fly at half-staff and blamed “radical left political violence.” Former Presidents Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush also denounced the violence, emphasizing its lack of place in a democracy. Utah Governor Spencer Cox explicitly labeled Kirk’s killing a “political assassination” and vowed that the perpetrator would face justice, mentioning the state’s death penalty.

Utah Valley University has announced its campus will remain closed until next week, suspending all classes and events. Approximately 3,000 people attended the outdoor “Prove Me Wrong” debate event where Kirk was fatally shot. The FBI has established an online tip line, urging anyone with information to come forward as the search for the assailant continues.
