Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced a combative Senate Finance Committee hearing on September 4, 2025, where Republican senators pressed him on his controversial COVID-19 vaccine skepticism and recent policy shifts. The hearing exposed a growing rift within the GOP, with Kennedy’s views seemingly at odds with the legacy of former President Donald Trump’s Operation Warp Speed.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, who played a role in Kennedy’s confirmation, challenged the Secretary to reconcile his stance with Trump’s highly touted initiative. Cassidy notably asked if Trump deserved a Nobel Prize for Operation Warp Speed, to which Kennedy surprisingly agreed, calling the program “genius” for its rapid vaccine development during the pandemic’s early stages.

However, Kennedy quickly reiterated his skepticism regarding current COVID vaccine recommendations, stating there is “no clinical data” supporting their use for healthy individuals. He defended recent changes that narrowed FDA approval to only those over 65 or younger people with underlying conditions, a move that contradicts broader public health consensus. Kennedy also refrained from confirming that over a million Americans died from COVID-19 or that vaccines saved millions of lives, citing insufficient publicly available data.

His views drew sharp criticism from other high-profile Republicans, including Sen. John Barrasso, who expressed “deep concern” over Kennedy’s leadership. Both Cassidy and Barrasso staunchly defended Operation Warp Speed as a model of American ingenuity.

President Trump, while praising Operation Warp Speed as “one of the greatest achievements ever,” has also recently taken to Truth Social to demand more data from vaccine companies, asking them to “justify the success of their various Covid Drugs.” Despite the internal party tension, the White House quickly rallied to Kennedy’s defense, with Vice President JD Vance criticizing Democratic senators and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt asserting the administration was “championing gold-standard science.” Trump himself offered praise for Kennedy, acknowledging his “different take” on vaccine views and stating he liked that the Secretary was “different.”
