New York City Mayor Eric Adams has vehemently denied persistent rumors that he would abandon his reelection campaign for a position within a potential Trump administration. The denial comes amidst reports that aides to former President Donald Trump have explored offering Adams a job, a move reportedly aimed at narrowing the field ahead of the November general election and preventing Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor.

Speaking to reporters in the Bronx on Wednesday, Mayor Adams stated unequivocally, “I have a job. I’m running for my reelection. I am still doing that, and I’m looking forward to getting reelected.” This statement directly addresses speculation that a Trump-led effort sought to influence the city’s political landscape, reportedly also including attempts to find a job for Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

The unfolding political drama has drawn sharp criticism from front-runner Zohran Mamdani, who accused Trump of undermining New York City’s democratic process. Mamdani suggested that such job offers confirm an intent to elevate independent candidate Andrew Cuomo as the primary alternative. “Backroom deals, corrupt agreements, all of which serve to increase the sense of disaffection and despair,” Mamdani commented, expressing confidence in his ability to win the general election regardless of the opponents.

Both Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa have also distanced themselves from the alleged Trump-led efforts, with Sliwa confirming he has not been contacted by the White House and remains committed to his campaign. Cuomo, running as an independent after a primary loss to Mamdani, reportedly believes a two-way race would benefit him.

The controversy adds another layer to Adams’ already challenging reelection bid, which has seen his administration grapple with corruption accusations against close allies. Despite being cleared of federal corruption charges earlier this year – a dismissal that both Mamdani and Cuomo have linked to a deal with the Trump administration – Adams continues to face scrutiny. His campaign spokesperson, Todd Shapiro, reiterated the mayor’s commitment: “Mayor Adams has not met with Donald Trump — don’t believe the noise. He is not dropping out of the race.”
