Laken Ashlee Snelling, a 21-year-old University of Kentucky athlete, is currently facing serious charges after authorities discovered a deceased infant in a closet at her residence. The incident, which came to light following a police call on August 27, has led to Snelling’s arrest and subsequent charges of corpse abuse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.

According to Lexington police, the infant was found wrapped in a towel inside a trash bag. Snelling, a former member of the University of Kentucky’s competitive cheer stunt squad, reportedly admitted to investigators that she had given birth to the child and attempted to conceal the birth by cleaning evidence and placing the infant along with cleaning items into a trash bag.

Snelling was arrested on Sunday and made a preliminary court appearance on Tuesday. While details regarding her bond were not immediately available, public records indicate she was no longer in custody by Tuesday morning. The local coroner’s office is conducting an autopsy to determine the infant’s cause of death, with further information expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

The charges against Snelling, particularly corpse abuse and tampering with physical evidence, are Class D felonies under Kentucky state law, carrying potential penalties of one to five years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. This case also draws attention to the broader implications following the overturning of Roe v Wade, as experts and women express concerns about pregnancy losses potentially being treated as criminal matters. Authorities have not yet clarified whether Snelling’s case involves a birth, miscarriage, stillbirth, or self-managed abortion.
