A devastating landslide has reportedly killed more than 1,000 people in a village located in the Marra Mountains area of western Sudan, according to a statement released by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) on Monday. The catastrophic event, which struck on August 31 after several days of relentless heavy rainfall, completely leveled the village, leaving only a single survivor.

The SLM/A, which controls the remote region within Darfur, has issued an urgent plea to the United Nations and various international aid agencies for immediate assistance in recovering the bodies of the victims, including men, women, and children. The affected community comprised individuals who had sought refuge in the Marra Mountains, fleeing the brutal two-year civil war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North Darfur state.

This ongoing conflict has plunged more than half of Sudan’s population into crisis levels of hunger and forced millions from their homes, with the capital of North Darfur, Al-Fashir, currently under intense fire. The landslide tragedy exacerbates an already dire humanitarian situation, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of displaced populations in the war-torn nation.
