WASHINGTON – Longtime Democratic Representative Jerry Nadler of New York has officially withdrawn his bid to remain the top Democrat on the influential House Judiciary Committee for the upcoming two years. Nadler, 77, has endorsed Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., clearing the path for Raskin’s ascent to the coveted position.

In a letter to his Democratic colleagues, Nadler expressed strong support for Raskin, 61, emphasizing the critical role the committee will play in providing congressional oversight of the FBI and the Justice Department, particularly with the prospect of an incoming Trump administration. Nadler’s decision effectively solidifies Raskin’s leadership, as no other challengers have emerged.

“As our country faces the return of Donald Trump, and the renewed threats to our democracy and our way of life that he represents, I am very confident that Jamie would ably lead the Judiciary Committee as we confront this growing danger,” Nadler wrote. “Therefore, I have decided not to run for Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee in the 119th Congress.”

Nadler, who has served in Congress since 1992 and led Democrats on the Judiciary panel since 2019, confirmed he would remain an active committee member, eager to collaborate with the new leadership.

Raskin’s move to the Judiciary Committee opens a new contest for the top Democratic spot on the House Oversight Committee. Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., has already announced his candidacy, while other members, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., are reportedly exploring a bid.
