Emotional Amanda Seyfried’s ‘The Testament of Ann Lee’ Stuns Venice with Record-Breaking Ovation

Amanda Seyfried was visibly overcome with emotion as her new film, ‘The Testament of Ann Lee,’ directed by Mona Fastvold, received an extraordinary 15-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. This remarkable reception surpassed ‘Frankenstein’ as the longest applause of the festival to date.
A teary-eyed Seyfried, alongside co-writer Brady Corbet, celebrated the audience’s enthusiastic response, pumping her fists as the applause stretched on. Fastvold, co-writer of the acclaimed ‘The Brutalist,’ also beamed at the overwhelming reception. Seyfried later commented to Variety, “I think people quite liked it,” after leaving the theatre.
The film, described as an ‘epic fable,’ stars Seyfried as the titular Ann Lee, an 18th-century female religious leader and founder of the Shaker movement. The cast also includes Lewis Pullman, Thomasin McKenzie, Stacy Martin, Tim Blake Nelson, Christopher Abbott, and Matthew Beard. Seyfried revealed she performs ‘un-singing’ or ‘anti-singing’ in the film, which features music by Oscar-winning composer Daniel Blumberg.
