Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ Receives Six-Minute Venice Ovation Amid Mubi Controversy

Indie auteur Jim Jarmusch’s new feature, ‘Father Mother Sister Brother,’ made its highly anticipated debut at the Venice Film Festival today, earning a resounding six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation from the audience. This marks a significant moment for Jarmusch, as it is his first film to play in competition at the prestigious Lido event.
The film, structured as a triptych, explores complex relationships between adult children and their somewhat distant parents across three distinct, contemporary stories set in different countries. It features an impressive ensemble cast including Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, and Françoise Lebrun.
The premiere’s excitement was tempered by a contentious press conference earlier in the day, where Jarmusch was pressed on distributor Mubi’s controversial relationship with Silicon Valley private equity firm Sequoia Capital. Hundreds of filmmakers have called for Mubi to return a $100 million investment from Sequoia due to its backing of Israeli defense-tech startups. Jarmusch stated, “I was, of course, disappointed and quite disconcerted by this relationship, and I think really, if you want to discuss it, you have to address Mubi about it. I’m not the spokesman.” He also emphasized that filmmakers should not bear the responsibility of addressing Mubi’s financial sourcing issues.
