A humanitarian flotilla, featuring prominent figures such as climate activist Greta Thunberg and actress Susan Sarandon, has embarked from Barcelona on a mission to the Gaza Strip. The Global Sumud Flotilla aims to deliver critical aid, including food, water, and medicine, and challenge the ongoing Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territory.

The expedition comes as the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with food experts having previously warned of widespread famine and hundreds of thousands facing catastrophic hunger. The nearly 23-month conflict has resulted in over 63,000 fatalities, with the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reporting a significant number of malnutrition-related deaths, including children.

Thunberg, speaking at a press conference in Barcelona, underscored the urgency of the mission, stating, “The story here is about Palestine… how people are being deliberately deprived of the very basic means to survive.” The convoy, comprising approximately 20 boats and delegations from 44 countries, is set to be joined by additional vessels from Italy, Greece, and Tunisia in the coming days.

Notable participants alongside Thunberg and Sarandon include “Game of Thrones” actor Liam Cunningham and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau. This mission follows previous attempts by activists to reach Gaza, including a June incident where Thunberg was deported after her ship was stopped by the Israeli military. Activists accuse Israel of consistently violating international law by intercepting aid vessels. The flotilla sails amidst reports that an Israeli official indicated a potential halt or slowdown of humanitarian aid into parts of northern Gaza as military operations expand in the region.
