In a significant show of solidarity, top European Union leaders have visited Moldova, publicly endorsing its pro-EU President Maia Sandu and strongly denouncing Russian disinformation campaigns ahead of a pivotal parliamentary election scheduled for September 28.

French President Emmanuel Macron, among the visiting dignitaries, underscored that Moldova’s ambition to join the European Union represents a commitment to peace and the rule of law, directly contrasting it with Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine. Macron emphatically dismissed ‘Kremlin propaganda’ attempting to portray Europeans as warmongers, stating, ‘Those are lies. Unlike Russia, the European Union threatens no one and respects the sovereignty of all… The European Union is in no way the Soviet Union.’

This high-profile endorsement from Europe’s most influential leaders is strategically timed to bolster President Sandu, who narrowly won reelection last year on a platform of closer EU integration. Sandu herself warned of persistent Russian efforts to manipulate the upcoming vote and mislead Moldovan citizens about the EU’s true intentions.

Moldova, a nation of 2.4 million people situated between Romania and Ukraine, remains a key target for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moscow is employing a range of hybrid tactics, from extensive disinformation campaigns to alleged vote-buying, in an attempt to exert control over the country while simultaneously prosecuting its kinetic war against Ukraine.
