A 16-year-old involved in a foiled plot to attack Taylor Swift’s Vienna concerts last year has avoided prison, receiving an 18-month suspended sentence under juvenile criminal law in Berlin on Tuesday. The teen, identified as Mohamed A, made a full confession to charges that he assisted a would-be attacker by translating bomb-making instructions from Arabic and connecting him with an Islamic State (IS) member. Prosecutors stated Mohamed A, who was 14 at the time of the plot, had been radicalized by IS propaganda online.

Swift’s three sold-out shows at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium were canceled in August last year after police uncovered the planned attack. While expressing devastation over the cancellations, Swift had previously stated her gratitude to authorities for preventing potential loss of life. An investigation into the main suspect, 20-year-old Austrian Beran A, is ongoing. He remains in custody following his arrest before the concerts, prompted by a tip-off from the CIA. The US intelligence service indicated the plotters aimed to cause mass casualties among concert-goers. Beran A is also alleged to have planned an earlier attack in Dubai in March 2024, reportedly part of a coordinated three-pronged IS assault, though he purportedly changed his mind at the last minute. Three other teenagers have also been detained by Austrian authorities in connection with the plot.
