Mexico City authorities have announced the arrest of 13 individuals allegedly involved in the high-profile killings of two staffers belonging to Mayor Clara Brugada’s team in May. The arrests, made following extensive investigations, shed new light on what officials describe as a meticulously orchestrated attack.

Among those apprehended, three suspects are believed to have been directly involved in the fatal shootings, while the remaining ten provided logistical support for the operation. The victims, Mayor Brugada’s personal secretary, Ximena Guzmán, and adviser, José Muñoz, were tragically shot dead in Guzmán’s vehicle on a Mexico City street in broad daylight on May 20. Guzmán was reportedly picking up Muñoz at a subway station, a routine practice.

Mayor Brugada stated that these arrests represent significant progress in an ongoing investigation. Mexico City’s Chief Prosecutor, Bertha María Alcalde Luján, detailed that five vehicles, including the motorcycle used by the shooter to flee, were integral to the coordinated operation. Two of these vehicles had been used to surveil the victims for weeks prior to the killings. Investigators even believe an earlier attempt was planned for May 14 but was called off when Guzmán did not pick up Muñoz that day.

Federal security chief Omar García Harfuch confirmed that the suspects initially fled to a neighborhood in Iztacalco, near the capital’s international airport, where they changed vehicles before escaping to neighboring Mexico State. The arrests followed 11 coordinated raids conducted early Wednesday. Mexico City Police Chief Pablo Vázquez Camacho noted that while various lines of investigation are being pursued, authorities are not yet disclosing a possible motive as the inquiry remains active.
