Walmart Recalls Frozen Shrimp Over Radioactive Contamination Risk

Walmart has issued an urgent recall for specific lots of its Great Value brand frozen, raw shrimp across 13 states due to potential contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prompted the recall after detecting the isotope in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp imported from Indonesia.
While the detected levels of Cesium-137 were significantly below FDA intervention thresholds, the agency advises consumers to avoid exposure, as low-level radiation over time could pose health concerns. “If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away,” the FDA cautioned.
The affected products include Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp with lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1, and 8005539-1, all bearing best-by dates of March 15, 2027. These items were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.
Consumers who have purchased these specific shrimp products are urged to discard them immediately or return them to any Walmart store for a full refund. The FDA continues its investigation into the Indonesian supplier, P.T. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), following initial alerts regarding Cesium-137 detection in their shipments.
