NATO forces responded swiftly overnight as Russia unleashed a massive drone and missile barrage across Ukraine, prompting two German Eurofighter Typhoon jets to scramble near the Romanian-Ukrainian border. The scramble occurred Tuesday night after Russian drones targeted Ukrainian ports along the Danube River, particularly in the Odesa region.

Ukraine’s air force reported a large-scale attack involving 93 drones and two ballistic missiles, of which 62 drones and one missile were successfully intercepted or suppressed. Impacts were reported across 20 locations nationwide. In the Odesa region, head Oleg Kiper confirmed that drones struck infrastructure and production facilities in Izmail, a key port city on the Danube, leading to fires and at least one injury.

The German aircraft, deployed to Romania as part of NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing missions, were dispatched to monitor the air situation near Tulcea County, bordering Ukraine. Romania’s Defense Ministry stated that while groups of Russian drones attacking Ukrainian Danube ports were identified, there were no penetrations of Romanian national airspace during this specific mission. This incident highlights the ongoing vigilance required by NATO members bordering Ukraine, as similar scrambles have become common in response to Russian long-range attacks, with past instances of Russian munitions entering allied airspace.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces shot down at least 42 Ukrainian drones overnight into Wednesday morning, leading to temporary flight restrictions at several airports in central Russia, including Volgograd and Saratov.
