MSNBC Rebrands as MS NOW Amid Full Split from NBC Universal

MSNBC, the cable news network known for its liberal commentary, is set to undergo a significant transformation, rebranding as My Source News Opinion World, or MS NOW. The name change, which will take effect later this year, marks a complete corporate divorce from NBC and NBC News.
The move follows NBC Universal’s spin-off of several cable networks, including MSNBC, CNBC, and E! Entertainment, into a new company named Versant last November. As part of its new identity, MS NOW will also remove NBC’s iconic peacock symbol from its logo, signaling its newfound independence.
Rebecca Kutler, President of MSNBC, addressed the internal shift in a memo to staff, acknowledging the difficulty of imagining the network under a new name. “During this time of transition, NBC Universal decided that our brand requires a new, separate identity,” Kutler stated. “This decision now allows us to set our own course and assert our independence as we continue to build our own modern newsgathering organization.”
The rebranding aims to solidify MS NOW’s distinct editorial voice, moving away from any perceived constraints or competition with NBC News. Personalities like Rachel Maddow have highlighted the positive implications, noting that the network will no longer have to vie for reporting resources, allowing it to pursue its own journalistic priorities directly. This separation is expected to enhance MS NOW’s ability to cater to its target audience with dedicated newsgathering.
