Leaked Audio: Ex-Israeli Intelligence Chief Called 50,000 Gaza Deaths ‘Necessary’

Explosive leaked audio recordings broadcast by Israel’s Channel 12 TV have revealed former Major General Aharon Haliva, Israel’s ex-chief of military intelligence, endorsing a staggering death toll in Gaza, stating that 50,000 Palestinian deaths were “necessary and required for future generations.”
In the recordings, Haliva, who oversaw intelligence leading up to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, explicitly stated that for every Israeli killed on that day, 50 Palestinians should die, adding, “It doesn’t matter if they’re children… From time to time, they need a Nakba to feel the cost.” The term ‘Nakba’ refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians in 1948.
This marks the first time a former senior Israeli military figure has been heard making such controversial remarks, which an Israeli human rights group, B’Tselem, has cited as further evidence of a “deliberate policy of genocide” – an accusation Israel denies, particularly in the ongoing case at the International Court of Justice. Haliva, who resigned in April 2024 taking responsibility for intelligence failures, has since confirmed the authenticity of the remarks from a private discussion, claiming they were taken out of context.
