Mississippi has become the fourth state to deploy its National Guard to Washington D.C., joining a growing federal operation spearheaded by the Trump administration. Governor Tate Reeves announced Monday that approximately 200 Mississippi National Guard Soldiers are being sent to the capital, citing a need to combat what he described as “out of control” crime.

This latest deployment follows similar commitments from West Virginia (300-400 troops), South Carolina (200), and Ohio (150). These states are bolstering President Donald Trump’s initial order to deploy 800 National Guard troops as part of a sweeping federal intervention. The operation, initiated by an executive order declaring a “crime emergency” in the District of Columbia, aims to assert federal control over the city’s policing and immigration enforcement, a move that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has criticized as potentially contradicting local laws.

Mayor Bowser has voiced strong skepticism about the administration’s intentions, suggesting the surge of troops and federal agents might be primarily focused on immigration enforcement rather than violent crime. She also expressed concern over federal agents operating while masked and refusing to identify themselves, urging D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith to seek clarification from the administration.

Federal agents from agencies including ICE, DEA, and FBI have been actively patrolling high-traffic areas, with the White House touting nearly 400 arrests made in the week since the operation commenced. Amidst the crackdown, protests against the federal presence have emerged, with demonstrators gathering in areas like Dupont Circle to voice their opposition.
