During a recent interview with Fox News, U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him China would not invade Taiwan while Trump remains in office. The revelation came ahead of anticipated talks between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning Moscow’s ongoing actions in Ukraine.

President Trump recounted Xi’s direct promise, stating, “He told me, ‘I will never do it as long as you’re president.’ President Xi told me that and I said, ‘Well, I appreciate that.’” However, Trump also noted Xi’s added sentiment: “but he also said, ‘But I am very patient and China is very patient.’”

This significant exchange follows the first confirmed call between Trump and Xi in June of President Trump’s second presidential term. China continues to assert its claim over Taiwan, a democratic and self-governed island, reserving the right to use force for reunification. Despite the U.S. being Taiwan’s primary arms supplier and international supporter, Washington maintains no formal diplomatic ties with Taipei, aligning with most global nations.
