BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombian conservative senator and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay died Monday, succumbing to injuries sustained more than two months ago in a shooting during a campaign rally in western Bogota. His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed the 39-year-old lawmaker’s death earlier today.

Senator Uribe Turbay had been critically wounded on June 7 when he was shot during a campaign event in the capital. He suffered severe gunshot wounds to the head and leg, undergoing emergency surgery and remaining hospitalized in intensive care until his passing.

A teenage suspect was arrested at the scene following the June attack, and authorities have since detained several other individuals in connection with the incident. Uribe Turbay’s death is expected to reignite concerns and discussions about political violence in the country.
